Adventure travel could be many things to many people. It could be as simple as going snorkeling for the first time or riding a jet ski. It could be going to Cedar Point and riding the thrill rides you swore you'd never set foot on (like I did this summer with my 12-year old niece). It could be parasailing, hot air ballooning, hiking, biking, rafting or any other type of physical activity. It could be experiences such as a culinary journey through the Napa Valley, a birding adventure in South America or an African safari. Even though adventure travel might mean different things to different people, it is the same for all of us in that it engages us in either a physical or mental (sometimes both) way that enriches our lives. It pushes us beyond what is comfortable and challenges us to be more than we thought we could be. It is living life to the fullest. It is, in a word, exhilarating!!!

Travel has always been an outlet for me in which I have experienced tremendous personal growth. Just the opportunities of visiting new places, meeting new people and experiencing life from different perspectives has enriched my life beyond measure. The last few years I have really begun to step "outside my box" in the type of travel experiences I am looking for. I have had some amazing opportunities to experience an East African Safari, to go hot air ballooning over the Serengeti, to play golf at the #1 course in Canada at Jasper Park Lodge and to experience the beautiful scenery of the California Wine Country from the two wheels of my bicycle. All of these experiences have left me a changed and, I'd like to think, better person. I have developed a love and interest in Africa, her history and her people and hope to visit many parts of the African continent in years to come. I have renewed my interest in the game of golf and hope to play for many years. I amazed myself on my bicycle in California by riding 50 miles in two days. Not bad for an out of shape middle-aged woman who hadn't been on a bike for about 20 years. I bought my own bike since I returned home and find that riding 20 miles a day really isn't that hard. I can't do anything about being middle aged, but my biking will take care of the out of shape part. All of these experiences have added much enrichment and enjoyment to my life. It is these types of experiences I will continue to seek out in my future travels and through this section of my website, I hope to introduce you to some experiences that can enrich your life.
Hard Adventure vs. Soft Adventure

I'd like to differentiate between these two types of adventure travel. Hard adventure travel requires specific skills, technical expertise, and equipment along with physical and mental fitness. There is a degree of unpredictability in accommodations and dietary options. Some examples of hard adventure travel may include mountain climbing, scuba diving, heli-skiing, endurance sports events and rafting of wild rivers. Soft adventure is less demanding and does not require major technical skills or highly specialized equipment. Accommodations and dining are more standardized and comfortable. Examples of soft adventure travel include walking and biking tours, expedition cruising, educational and cultural tours, wilderness lodges, birding tours and safaris.
